The Story Behind EasyTaxFix
Entrepreneur brothers and San Diego, California residents Adam and Jeff Berkson founded EasyTaxFix in 2008 when they discovered they both had been overpaying property taxes on their homes by more than $1,000 per year. Like countless homeowners in San Diego, Adam and Jeff were overpaying on property taxes because the County does not automatically adjust property value assessments downward in a declining real estate market.
While every California homeowner has the right to file a property tax appeal based on a reduction in home values, the process is time-consuming, confusing and presents roadblocks for the average person with no easy access to details about comparable sales required by the County.
Adam and Jeff developed EasyTaxFix’s online platform to enable users the ability to instantly determine if they are among the one in four San Diego homeowners paying too much in property taxes. My personal experience as a San Diego homeowner mirrors that of thousands of California residents who are currently overpaying on property taxes. Three years ago I purchased a 3-bedroom home in Point Loma. In 2008 I put the property on the market, valued at 10% lower than what I paid for it. However my taxes were still based on an even higher assessment than the original purchase price! The County had been increasing my property assessment by 2% per year as opposed to reducing it to compensate for the market decline!
